The coastal area around Didim, Altinkum (the golden sand), may be one of Turkey's best natural beaches, but for those looking for a distraction from the superb sunbathing and watersports, this town has a wealth of history on offer.
An ancient Ionic sanctuary and once a thriving part of the Greek Empire, Didim has numerous places of historical importance, including the Temple of Apollo and the Temple of Artemis – the former built to house an oracle, the original site having been destroyed by the Persians and rebuilt around 300 B.C.There's also the nearby Roman city of Ephesus, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World and regarded as the best preserved ancient city in Asia Minor.
For those looking for something a little more up to date, the Dolphin Square in Altinkum has many fascinating restaurants, bars and shops, with some of the most varied and liveliest nightlife in the Mediterranean. Didim is also in close proximity to the ancient city of Miletos, as well as Kusadasi and Bodrum, with easy access by ferry to the Greek island of Kos.
